Ohai!

How odd that having to delete some spam (in Russian, no less) from a moderated community on here brings me back.

Well not more odd than any other spam I suppose...it was spam.

Nothing of import to relay, just re-affirming that I'm not dead.  In case you were wondering, which I know you were.

03:56 pm - Technology and V. Tech Murders

Lifted from TCS Daily, here.

Evil is unspectacular and always human and shares our bed and eats at our own table.

-- W. H. Auden

We are now enduring the endless outpouring of words from those trying to "come to grips" with what happened at Virginia Tech.

(I found myself about to type the word "tragedy" to describe what happened, but we have succeeded in rendering that word so lame and so far from its original meaning that even its generally accepted sense of "any dramatic, disastrous event, especially one of some moral significance," is imprecise and not really useful here.)

We tote up the figures. We compare this slaughter with Whitman at the Texas tower, or that guy at Luby's Cafeteria, or the boys at Columbine. All the dumbed-down and numbed-down words are poured forth, column after column - slaughter, massacre, grim, terrorized, etc.

We still seem transfixed by old technology. We endlessly gabble about "automatic weapons" and the speed with which they can kill. We are reminded that a "hand gun" can be easily concealed - in a backpack or a winter jacket.

Well, yes, this Korean emigre could not have killed so many people so quickly if he were firing and loading a musket - or for that fact, wielding a baseball bat or a machete. But the power to kill, to slaughter more efficiently and at a distance has been in man's hands for centuries.

And yet we continue to wallow in the world of if only. If only it were not so easy to get a hand gun. If only those hapless campus police had locked down the school. If only there weren't all those video games where you can mindlessly shoot people at the push of a button.

If only it weren't so easy to kill.

Bronze made it easier. The broadsword made it easier. The crossbow. The musket ball, the bullet. The revolver, the Winchester, the Gatling, the Maxim, the Browning. Brass and powder and lead, packaged and propelled so rapidly by physics and man's inventiveness.

But whether the tool is a rock or a 9mm. pistol, the "easier" part comes from a man's heart.

Technology will always make it ever easier to live and die. And its "proper control" will continue to be the first refuge of those who find it difficult to believe, let alone deal with, the truth of an evil or demented mind, a dark heart, a hellishly bent soul and its capacity to surprise, horrify and confound us.

01:09 pm - *grin*
Yesterday was a great day for many reasons.  It started and ended well.  To those involved in making it a great day, you know who you are.

I'm glad life is funny, or at least it pretends to have a sense of humor.

A lot of times, just when you see yourself picking up, it boots you in the teeth, just to let you know that maybe you aren't in the clear yet.    I think I managed to achieve some sense of balance lately, between bootings or whatever my crappy metaphor is here. :)

Ehh, I can't really complain I guess, life has just been hectic.   Feeling light on friends lately too.  I know it's not the case mind you, but a lot of them have moved away in the past year, and that's kinda hard in some ways.   Had a little party last night...and I mean little.  6 people came over, when normally these partys are around 12.  So I have a crapton of leftover food now. Oh well...diet out the window I guess for the time being.   Aww, who am I kidding, I was never on a diet, but I was eating better...guess I should clarify that.

Anyway...back to wherever the day takes me.

11:15 pm - Anybody miss me?
Don't worry, it's cool if you didn't.  Man...can't believe it's been over a year since I posted anything.  Mass kudos to those of you who stuck it out. :)

Lot happened in the last year, learned a lot about who I was, who I wasn't, dropped 15 lbs, did some things I was proud of, some things I wasn't so proud of, made many new friends, lost a couple friends too.  No deaths though....gotta count that as good for the past year.   I tried being someone I wasn't.  I didn't like him.  Left him in a ditch somewhere....  Remembered who I was, if you missed him,  he's back.  :)

I did learn something interesting though.  How easily people can have misconceptions about things...little things, big things. Something you might think of as inconsequential can move the world, for good or for bad.  It's in trying to fix the bad that you learn I guess. :)    Some lessons are harder than others.

Do I have anything to share with any of you?  Yep.  Don't ever get bogged down in negativity...not within yourself, not from external sources.  If people around you are too negative..challenge them.  If they can't be positive, move on.  If you're too negative.  Pray that someone tries to help you be less so.

Deep enough for you?  Don't grab your waders or anything...  ;)

12:29 am - Update
What more than once a year?? I know..you're ALL shocked.

Let me give you the short version...

I was getting a house, I had been married 3 years. (Yes, read into that...no house now, and wife is divorcing me...why you might ask is she doing that? Someone needs to explain it to me, and everyone else who knows her, because NOBODY knows why. At this point...I'm cutting my losses, gonna power through, and find me a woman who appreciates me.)

I still like my new job.

I still like all you peeps...sorry I don't post more. :(

12:21 am - Annual update.
Ok, all you haters who want to get on me for not posting. Don't.

That said, here's the news:

New Job. Oracle. Start in January.

Building a House. Should be ready in July or so.

Haven't yet conquered the world...work in progress.

I still make and enjoy alcoholic beverages.

Annoying addendum to the previous statement: some grapes come treated with sulfur, they use it as a fungicide..however...it produces beautiful red wine..that tragicly smells like rotten eggs.

Further addendum to the previous addendum (addendum is a fun word): Rotten egg smelling wine can be fixed by using copper in some way shape or form...hoping to salvage that wine...more to come..check back for annual update #2 in 2006. :P
